Leyla…

by Benita Aydoğan

Dictionaries say; 1 night. 2. Woman with her hair jet black as the night. 3. the last night of the Arabi month.

They call him Leyla Sultan. Relatives of Artvin and his family are Yadigar. In contrast to her name meaning, she was born in the morning, near the end of the month. And her hair was silky, and brunette … And her eyes were blue.

The story of Leyla Sultan influences you, others who tell me about this article. So every minute of your 74-year-old life is worth telling. 70 years ago, almost every girl born on this land as early as everything early … Early marry, get up early, take the early road, the story of those who hear early does not want to delay life.

Sultan or his family as the “Yadigar” was born in Artvin, Yusufeli-Ishan village. She wanted to be a nurse, and she married in 15. She became a mother in 16. She told me, at that time there was no such thing as marrying early, which was normal. And finally she said ‘I saw that I was married.’’

Her husband Lütfi and Uncle Leyla married loved each other. Uncle Lütfi, he has deep blue eyes, brown hair like silk, heart like cotton. He must have thought, “A tough Artvin woman, like iron.” Ad the first child, Nihat.

A year later, they had another son, but they lost it. Then another child, but he too died. Age 20, ‘’ At that time there was no hospital, it was not like the present. I was very upset’’.

When she was 7, she became pregnant again. Again, they were very frightened, but the beautiful baby Nihal was born. The naughty kid of the house. Nihal would have followed him as he ran away from home. Leyla Sultan would have a hard time finding them.

Everyone knows, loves, Lütfi Uncle because the village is a grocery store. He had built the roads to the village of Ishan at that time and although it has been many years since then, inhabitants are still using that road. Age 29. Again, an early lost. Leyla Sultan at the age of 29 lost Uncle Lütfi. A beautiful family of four, who are closely tied together, have suffered a great sadness with the lose of Uncle Lütfi as a result of an unrelenting illness. Their spiritual losses are unpredictable, but the battle for survival is separate, and that is the pregnant of other separations. What to do? Send to school. The first departure from Uncle Lütfi’s another relic village road starts with the departure of Nihat. Then Leyla Sultan, then Nihal.

The children read, knowing the value of their mothers. Leyla Sultan works from morning till evening in a big factory in Istanbul. She gets used to Istanbul. Of course, with the help of his relatives’ brothers.

Now, she has two children, three grandchildren and a cat. She raised her children well for kindness, she did it. How different from the dictionary definition of Leyla herself, change the meaning of Leyla perhaps, whatever went wrong in her life by re-writing them all beautification. ‘’ I thank Allah for that every day.’’

Casey Neıstat

by Hamza Azouzi

The person Im doing a portrait article about is Casey Neistat an American influencer, or a phenomenon of Youtube.

It is almost impossible to mention Casey without talking about his iconic look.

That starts of course with the weird modified sunglasses, unbranded as he does to almost all his belonging, as well as his curly blond hair that he does not care about , dressed in a non giving a single care about his fancy belt that his wife might have gifted him or being casual in grammy awards celebrations.

Casey is one of the greatest speakers ive even listened to, not only he is capable of giving motivational speeches but also he is a great story teller, he is capable of making you travel to a place and live so many emotions while you are sitting in your couch watching one of his vlogs.

Lıvıng ın Hearts: Ara Güler

by Meltem Tuvanç

According to most people, he is one of the best photographers in the world,; but he is the only photo-journalist in Turkey. Ara Güler was born in 1928 in Istanbul. A person who has dedicated 65 years to taking photographs. He said ‘’The photojournalist does not retire; he lives in photography with a shutter sound’’. Photography is a history event for him. Ara says he stopped the date with a machine. Because we are actually writing history while people are living, we stop by this historical moment and make them a memory. Isn’t that what we call photography, squares that smell history?

Sometimes sadness takes place in these frames, sometimes happiness, sometimes a few beautiful places in the world. The photos of the search give a lot of emotions to a lot of emotions and perhaps many experiences. When looking at these photographs, we can sometimes feel sad, sometimes lost in the depths of history, and sometimes realize the lives anyone know. Here is the feeling of confusion when one looks at these masterpieces. There is such thing as looking at Istanbul from Ara Güler’s perspective; black and white but full of life. He added invisible colors to the black-and- white in his photos. As colorful photos of black-and-white involve sadness. People should know life, living, where the lives. But not just his own life; for example, the people you live in the neighborhoods should know the people. They must know the beauty and ugliness of the city they have devoted his life to.

Ara Güler, who likes photos like a child, also shows us the point of view. In fact, Ara Güler wasn’t thinking of being a journalist. Because in his youth he was more interested in acting. But he takes pictures. In his photographs, theater, decor can be seen because of his interest in theater, acting. He also took his trainings. He also took photographs when he was dealing with theater. He found himself in Yeni Istanbul newspaper and then began working as a photojournalist. Then he studied Journalism at Istanbul University. We can say that this newspaper was the basis of all the valuable works that have come up to now. Who has dedicated his years to photography and photojournalism, after the newspaper of Yeni İstanbul, he appeared in many newspapers and magazines such as Hürriyet, Hayat, Zaman, Paris-Match and Sunday Times. In his time journalism, especially photojournalism was difficult. Because the film machines were used and they had to have a bath to make them photo. It was not possible to handle photos or movies by e-mail. You were handing in hand; If you were farther away, you were entrusting the road with someone in there and sending or sending by airplane. Of course if the photos did not arrive in time, the news was garbage. Speed in journalism is very important. Because the story, the photo, the article, the whole thing must be complete.

Nowadays, thanks to the development of technology every day, everything has accelerated. Digital cameras, recording devices, computers, and the biggest communication tool, smartphone and mail have joined the news life. Even though he is pleased with the development of journalism and technology, Ara Güler complains about the people of our day. In the past, there was sincerity and friendship; everyone has supported eachother. You need to know the value of old times. It is possible to see everyone from the politician to the artist. He described this as follows: ‘‘ I am a journalist. The duty of the journalist is not only to go and follow the political things, but also to make an interview with the artist or the interview of a city. All this is journalism’’. For this reason, it is possible to see many famous people such as İsmet İnönü, Winston Churchill, Indira Gandhi, John Berger, Bertrand Russell, Bill Brandt, Alfred Hitchcock, Ansel Adams, Imogen Cunningham, Salvador Dali and Picasso. The people whom Ara Güler wanted to photograph the most were Charlie Chaplin, Jean Paul Sartre and Einstein. Those photographs were only works for many people, but only for those who were photographed and interviewed by Ara’s friends or someone.

In 1953, he was selected as one of the top 7 photographers in the world by the Photography Annual analogy. In 1962, he received the “Master of Leica” title given to very few photographers in Germany. In many countries, his photographs were exhibited. There are also more than 40 memories of his life and photographs taken by him. It is the definition of photojournalism itself. The professions; he was able to carry out journalism correctly, completely and impartially. Because “The journalist is called the man who is not afraid of anyone.”. He was not only a photographer, he is a photojournalist. We hope that the new Ara Güler will appear in the future.

Eye of Istanbul: Ara Güler

by Kübra Çini

Ara Güler was born in Istanbul, which is home to hundreds of years of civilizations such as Rome, Byzantine and Ottoman. He was born on 16 August 1928. Güler, who opened his eyes to such an important city and country, would move rapidly to become one of the most important names raised by that country.

Güler, who has been interested in photography and camera since her childhood, had her first meeting with art in film studios during her high school years, starting with working in all areas of cinema. Later, he became a student in the theater of Muhsin Ertuğrul. Because at that time there was a dream of being a playwright.

Having spent his university years in the Faculty of Economics at Istanbul University, Güler has taken the first step to ensure that he has a successful career. This step was in 1950 when he started to work in Yeni Istanbul Newspaper. This step was the first step that allowed him to see many places in the world and receive many more awards until the award of the state artist.

Güler, who wrote stories at the beginning, realized that he was able to explain something more with photography, so he turned to this area and in 1954 he became the Photography Department Chief of Hayat Magazine. The Photography Annual Anthology, published in the UK, has shown him to be one of the top 7 photographers in the world.

Ara Güler proved himself in the field of photography and became the only Turkish member of the American Magazine Photographers Association. His pride would only be the basis of the greater pride he will bring in the future.

Güler, who added new success to his international achievements, won the title Master Of Lecia, given to very few photographers in Germany. Camera magazine in Switzerland has prepared a special magazine for him. Güler, who is known for his photography in the most important and famous countries of the world such as Japan, Canada, America, Germany and Switzerland, took part in the exhibitions.

Perhaps his most important work was the interviews he made with people known all over the world and the photographs he took. As a result of these achievements and outstanding career, he was awarded with state art, culture and art award in his country and even received the title of Legion in France.

He continues to narrate the story in his photographs. He opposes the idea that photography is an art. Ara Güler sees the photograph as stopping the flow of the history, archiving it to the archive, preventing it from going off.

He says that Istanbul, where he was born and grew up, is now extinct, people have exhausted him and he says that today’s photographers are photographing the agony of Istanbul and not Istanbul.

“When I go out on the street I’m looking for that old Istanbul, but that Istanbul no longer. Where is this Istanbul? has fallen into the sea. What is your favorite Istanbul? There is an apartment or a garden in Salacak, there is a mansion behind it, there the blind cat emerges or a small kitten emerges from the window.”

He has traveled all over the world making photo interviews and announced them to the world with Magnum. He has photographed many famous people such as İsmet İnönü, Winston Churchill, Indira Gandhi, John Berger, Bertrand Russel, Bill Brandt, Alfred Hitchcock, Ansel Adams, Imogen Cunningham, Salvador Dali and Picasso. His most famous is the Picasso interview, which does not pose to the photographers. Despite his successes, Güler continued to define himself as a photojournalist.

Ara Guler who was best known for capturing poignant and nostalgic images of a bygone Istanbul but who also portrayed famous figures and everyday life in far-flung lands, died on October 17, 2018 in the city he so lovingly chronicled. He was 90. He left a lot of moments behind his 90 years in life.

“People call me an Istanbul photographer. But I am a citizen of the world. I am a world photographer.”

ALTAN ÖYMEN AND JOURNALISM

by Begüm Başarır

Altan Öymen is known as ‘Altan Abi’ among journalists. Altan Öymen was a teacher of many journalists in the world of press. He was born on June 20, 1932 in İstanbul.

Thanks to his father, he made his first steps on the road to journalism. It was his father’s inspiration for writing that inspired him. Öymen Kardeş magazine, which he and his brother brought together, formed the first foundations of his journalism. Fevziye Abdullah Tansel who is a literature teacher in high school played a role in strengthening his relationship with writing. Later on, he started to prepare the wall paper of Atatürk High School, Ata Yolu.

And all of this came together and his interest in journalism began with the curiosity he got from his father. In 1950, he started working at the Ankara Ulus newspaper during his university years. And he has been working as a journalist since then. According to him, journalism was always his real job. But this was not seen by the environment nor by his family.

Journalism wants to be a journalist at a time when the value of his profession proves how much he loves. Although he graduated from the Financial Department, Political Science, never thought to be a civil servant. Even during the internship period, the most important issue in journalism was the accuracy of the news. Even if dissident news were made in the newspapers he worked for, he paid attention to investigate the accuracy of these first. After the newspaper Ulus, he worked for Yeni Ulus and Halkçı newspapers. He had the opportunity to work in many newspapers in the same period. During the years he passed to Tercüman newspaper, he served as a news service to both Halkçı and Sabah Posta newspaper as well as a Adana newspaper. He used half of his house as a bureau for a while. In the 1970s, he managed to get a visa to go to Red China. Altan Öymen returned one month later with an excellent interview from China.

The interview is called the giant giant: China. It is not possible to see Altan Öymen’s farsightedness and the fluency of the interview letter when a brief look at the interview. During his interview, he quickly gained circulation from Günaydın newspaper. He was able to be in weeks, speaking in an interview in Turkey. In 1972, he founded ANKA Agency. In the same year, he was arrested on charges of hijacking airplanes during strict government, but this accusation was unsubstantiated and he was released. This most grieving event throughout her life has been this arrest. In 1975, together with Uğur Mumcu, they discovered the corruption of Imaginary Furniture Exports. And this news is the most basic example of investigative journalism. When the newspapers in those years were examined, it was the most striking news of the period. In the same year, they published this research with Uğur Mumcu and wrote the Furniture File. In 1977, although his job in the agency went very well, he accepted Bülent Ecevit’s proposal to become a member of parliament. And was elected deputy minister of Tourism and Promotion. He served as CHP group deputy. After the resignation of Deniz Baykal, he was elected as the Chairman of CHP. But she never took her side in journalism. Besides the newspaper life, he also had an intense political life. It has not been for every journalist to successfully manage a lot of work in the field of press and politics, and to do this without mixing each other.

Aydın Doğan’s statement for Altan Öymen;

” I’m one of the people who know how strong the journalistic spirit in Altan Öymen is because we work over many years together. Altan Öymen journalism, the thesis is alive and the attack, long-term editorial has been so cold-blooded. Working with him as a journalist and being a friendship has always been of particular value to me and will continue to carry.

When you look at the news and articles written about Altan Öymen, it is generally possible to see praise. In addition to her career success, she has led to her success in human relations. Throughout his 67 years of journalism, he has created a wide circle of friends. Many journalists’ praise about Altan Öymen has been an indication that he did his job right. It has a great style. How long can you feel like a story or a detective novel when you read a story? Altan Öymen’s journalism is such a journalism. You don’t even understand the news when you read the news. He must have a literary language that makes his journalist identity so good. After reading his books you can run bookstores what is another book. When it comes to news and journalism, it is only possible to say gaz focused on the job Bu. He should be one of those high-ranking journalists who don’t consider the news big or small.

Oktay Ekşi for Altan Öymen ‘The title is not focused on doing its job.’ This statement actually describes what is called. It is the investigative journalism that best illustrates journalism and its fluent language. It is possible to understand many news in a breath without falling into a confusion of meaning. In 2016, she published her Kayıp Yaz book. After this book in 2018, 01 Adana: 80’li yıllarda Adana published two more books, Umutlar and İdallar 1960-1961.
